Name of creator
Brooklyn Church of Scotland
Administrative history
Brooklyn, Prince Edward Island is located five miles southwest of Montague. It is unclear when the Church of Scotland congregation was established in this community, but it is known that Reverend Donald MacDonald (1793-1867), first Church of Scotland minister on PEI, who began ministering in the Murray River area circa 1826 played an integral role in establishing this church and the one in Belle River which were part of the same charge.
Name of creator
Belle River Church of Scotland
Administrative history
Belle River is located eleven miles west of Murray River, Prince Edward Island . It is unclear when the Church of Scotland congregation was established in this community, but it is known that Reverend Donald MacDonald (1793-1867), first Church of Scotland minister on PEI, began ministering in the Murray River area circa 1826. It appears that the Belle River congregation and that of Brooklyn came under one charge and that Reverend MacDonald played an integral role in establishing the two churches. It is documented that in the winter of 1902, the Belle River Church was relocated to land purchased from Joseph Saunders, where it presently stands.
Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds consists of records of baptisms within the Brooklyn and Belle River Church of Scotland congregations from 1868 to 1894. Upon the death of Reverend Donald MacDonald in 1867, baptisms were performed by elder George Bears from 1868 to 1878 and from 1879 to 1894, by Bear's successor John Compton. The fonds also contains a list of "extraordinary cases" recorded by Elder Peter Hume from 1868-1889.
