Biographical history

When the United Church of Canada was established in 1925, several Methodist and Presbyterian churches in the general Montague, Prince Edward Island, area joined the new denomination. The major participants in this change included: the Valleyfield Presbyterian church which served at various times the congregations of Cardigan, Dundas, Georgetown, Wood Islands, Caledonia, Union Road, Victoria Cross, Lyndale, and Upper Montague; the Trinity Presbyterian church in Montague; the Sturgeon Methodist church; as well as the Lower Montague Presbyterian and Methodist churches which had united in 1923. The latter church amalgamated with Trinity United Church some time prior to the 1968. In that year, due to an increasing membership and the need for larger facilities, the Valleyfield, Sturgeon, and Montague United churches joined to establish the Montague United Church pastoral charge. In 1971, the Valleyfield United Church building was moved from its original location to a site above the Wood Islands Hill in Montague and renamed the Hillcrest United Church.
