Biographical history

George Forbes, merchant and politician from Vernon Bridge, Prince Edward Island was born o 25 November 1840 at Hilsboro River, the son of Malcolm Forbes ad Christina Scott. He was elected a Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly for 4th Queen's from 1886-1904 and from 1915 to 1919 as well as running a thriving shipping business and store in Vernon River Bridge. For some years he also served on the Board of Education. Forbes was married on 22 March 1877 to Jessie Isabel Stewart of Dunstaffnage and had one son.

Custodial history

The records were discovered on the old MacGillvary property in Vernon Bridge. The property was owned by a Doris MacKay at the time the records were deposited in the Public Archives and Records Office.

Scope and content

The collection consists of a ledger assumed to be from the Forbes business in Vernon River Bridge and two calendars from Prince of Wales College and Normal School in Charlottetown for 1892/93 and 1893/94. The ledger contains accounts of oats shipped by various vessels and disposed of through the store.

The calendars from Prince of Wales contain entrance examinations, roster of staff, course of study and timetable, honours lists, graduating diplomas, medalists, scholarships, and lists of students in attendance with their ages and place of residence.
