Scope and content

This fonds consists of 50 gasoline ration coupons affixed to paper and approximately 50 coupons (halved or complete) stored in an envelope.

In 1942 the Government of Canada, as part of their war measures, imposed the rationing of gasoline. The system, as regulated by the Department of Munitions and Supply, required owners of motor vehicles to obtain a license to purchase gasoline and issued ration coupon books. Each vehicle had a category and class designation which determined how much gasoline would be allocated. The category was determined by the occupation of the vehicle owner, how essential his service was deemed. The class was designated by the make and model of the car. A rural veterinary surgeon (category C), for example, with a DeSoto (class 2) was allotted a maximum of 188 units (940 gallons) per year.
