Scope and content

The fonds consists of the Commission which appointed Archibald McKay as surveyor of lumber for the city of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

The timber trade played a very important role in the economy of Prince Edward Island in the nineteenth century. This is reflected by an act passed in 1849 entitled "An Act to regulate the Survey of Timber and Lumber" was passed by the PEI Legislature setting out specifications for merchantable timber and allowing for the appointment of surveyors to inspect all timber to see that it met these specifications. Although it was to continue for only ten years, it obviously was still in effect almost fifty years later.
