Administrative history
Lloyd's of London is a well-known insurance company. In the nineteenth century it was one of the principal insurers of vessels for Great Britain and the colonies. Each vessel that was to be insured was minutely surveyed as to materials and construction to ensure that it met the company's specifications and safety regulations. These surveys were undertaken while the vessel was under construction and following repairs. Reports recommending classification were returned to Lloyd's where they were maintained and updated.
Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds consists of microfilm containing the portion of Lloyd's survey reports that relates to vessels surveyed in Prince Edward Island from 1856 to 1899. They are arranged in a single sequence by survey number assigned in the order received. This results in a rough chronological sequence. A survey for a particular vessel should be located in the year in which it was built or launched. Information given on the survey includes place and date the vessel was built and launched, names of owner, master and builder, tonnage, details of construction and quantities and types of materials used. The surveyor also gives a written assessment of the general condition of the vessel, including any abnormalities, and recommends a classification. Correspondence between the surveyor and the head office may also be included.
