Department recognizes National Teen Driver Safety Week

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal

Islanders are reminded to leave the phone alone when behind the wheel as part of National Teen Driver Safety Week, says Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey.

“Taking your eyes off the road, even for a couple of seconds, is dangerous and can cause a serious collision. Islanders should follow the rules of the road and never drive while texting,” said the minister. “Everyone, regardless of age, has a role to play in creating lifelong safe driving habits and keeping our Island roads safe.”

National Teen Driver Safety Week is held the third full week in October.

Driving is an important and exciting milestone for youth. It is also one of the riskiest activities for young people to engage in.

Teen driver safety is a significant issue in Canada. Young drivers are over-represented in all road-related injuries and fatalities.

National Teen Driver Safety Week is dedicated to raising awareness and seeking solutions to preventable teen deaths on the road across Canada.

Driving while using a phone is illegal on Prince Edward Island. The penalty is a fine between $325-$475, and the driver receives three demerit points.
