“These two structures are important links in the new expanded provincial park as they will connect park land on both sides of the Trans-Canada Highway and across the West River,” said the minister. “The pedestrian bridges will make it easier for Islanders to access the park while ensuring sensitive habitat locations are protected.”

Gaudette’s Transit Mix was awarded the tender.

A new Green Road footbridge across the West River will replace the old timber bridge that was washed away due to flooding this spring. Work is expected to continue until the end of October.

In addition, a multi-use pedestrian path under the Bonshaw bridge to connect the park on either side of the highway will be constructed. Work is expected to continue until the end of November. There will be no access under the Trans-Canada Highway at the Bonshaw bridge while work on the path is ongoing.

The construction of these structures was included in the recommendations of the Bonshaw Hills Public Lands Committee. The committee is comprised of government and non-government members who volunteered their time and specialized expertise. The recommendations were presented to government last November following public consultation. The recommendations will ensure the protection and sound management of environmentally sensitive public lands in the Bonshaw Hills.
