Province to honour paralympian Mark Arendz
Tourism and Culture
“Mark’s achievements are just tremendous and they give all Islanders reason to be proud,” said Minister Docherty. “To honour his inspiring performances at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics, we will hold a naming ceremony at the opening of the season at Brookvale that will see a new sign erected identifying the Nordic centre as Mark’s home training facility and will see one of its biathlon trails named after him. This will serve as a lasting recognition of Mark’s incredible accomplishments.”
Arendz won two medals at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics – silver and bronze. He is also the reigning world cup champion in the 7.5 kilometer sprint and he finished in the top ten at two events at the Vancouver Paralympics in 2010. He was the first Islander to medal in biathlon at the national championships.
Arendz lost his left arm to the elbow in a farming accident when he was seven years old.
“We are very happy to be able to honour Mark’s accomplishments by naming the trail after him,” said Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson. “And by identifying Brookvale as Mark’s home training facility on the front sign, Islanders will be reminded about his achievements for years to come. I am sure that Mark’s accomplishments will serve to inspire islanders to become more active and enjoy all that Brookvale has to offer.”
