Island: The Collected Stories by Canadian author Alistair MacLeod has been chosen as this year’s selection for One Book One Island, says Minister of Tourism and Culture Robert Henderson.

“I couldn’t imagine a more fitting title for the One Book One Island promotion,” said Minister Henderson. “Not only is Alistair MacLeod an award winning Canadian author with roots in the Maritimes, but he also writes many of his stories in a cabin on a high hill in Cape Breton with a distant view of Prince Edward Island. I encourage all Islanders to pick up a copy of Island from local public libraries or bookstores and join in this great annual promotion of reading and literacy.”

Island is a collection of 16 short stories written by MacLeod at various points in his illustrious career. It was published in 2000 by McLelland and Stewart after the success of MacLeod’s award winning No Great Mischief prompted a renewed interest in the author’s earlier works.

MacLeod will participate in an author visit on October 22 and 23 that will include public readings and stops at three of the Island’s public libraries.

One Book One Island was first launched in 2011 as a way to encourage reading and literacy with Islanders. Since then thousands of residents have participated in the promotion.

Copies of Island are available in both official languages at all 27 public library locations on Prince Edward Island. Two local bookstores, the Bookmark and Indigo, are also offering a 10% discount on the purchase of the book when customers present a valid public library card.
