Ministers announce new rules to promote health at Brookvale during National Non-Smoking Week

“Brookvale is a facility that promotes physical activity and healthy lifestyles by providing a venue where skiers and snowboarders can enjoy winter to the fullest,” said Minister Henderson. “And while much of the facility is already smoke free, we decided that we should take that a step further by banning smoking anywhere on the property much like many other sporting facilities on the Island.”
Brookvale already restricts smoking on the lift, in the lift lineup, on the hill itself and within 15 feet of any building. The new rules will see the entire property become a smoke-free zone. And, while there will be no additional staff hired to enforce the new policy, Minister Henderson said the new rules will be enforced by members of the ski patrol and current staff. The Minister says he’s also hopeful the general public will politely remind smokers of the property-wide ban.
“Brookvale has provided exceptional outdoor physical activity opportunities for years,” said Minister Currie. “The expansion of their smoke-free policy to include the full premise in 2014 shows their commitment to providing patrons a healthy and safe environment and their leadership to help the province combat the threat of exposure to second-hand smoke.”
Minister Henderson and Minister Currie chose to make the announcement during National Non-Smoking Week 2013.
“The Canadian Cancer Society PEI Division applauds the provincial government for its recent decision to go smoke free at Brookvale Provincial Ski Park. Recognizing that it is a facility that promotes healthy living, it is a natural step to provide a smoke-free environment for all visitors,” said Lori Barker, Executive Director of the Canadian Cancer Society PEI Division. “In addition, we know that smoking restrictions create a norm of not smoking and motivate people to quit or cut back so it is always our hope that new policies, like this one, will prompt more individuals to quit smoking.”
Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Canada. Prince Edward Island has one of the highest smoking rates in the country at 19 per cent.
