2011-2012 Capital Budget continues to return infrastructure spending to traditional levels

Finance and Energy

The 2011-2012 Capital Budget continues to return infrastructure spending to traditional levels while continuing to meet the targets set out in the 2008, five-year capital stimulus plan, said Finance and Municipal Affairs Minister Wes Sheridan.

“I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish as a result of our last two stimulus budgets,” said Minister Sheridan. “They provided a much-needed boost to our economy during a time of global economic turmoil, created jobs for Islanders from one end of this province to the other, and accelerated improvements to our hospitals, manors, schools and highways.”

Capital spending for 2011-2012 includes funding for a new palliative care centre, continuing work on École Saint-Augustin and renovations to Miscouche School, as well as construction of a new school for Souris.

“Our aging infrastructure had reached the point where investment was critical,” said Minister Sheridan. “Our capital spending, over the life of our five-year plan, is ensuring that Islanders can continue to rely on these assets when, and where, they are needed.”

Copies of the 2011-2012 Capital Budget are available at Island Information Service, 368-4000, 11 Kent Street, or on the provincial government website: www.gov.pe.ca/Capital Budget 2011-2012.
