The PEI Analytical Laboratories recently received renewed accreditation from the Standards Council of Canada. Accreditation is the formal recognition of the technical and professional competence of testing laboratories.

“Islanders can be assured that our provincial labs are providing high-quality services and meeting international standards,” said Minister Brown. “This accreditation is due to the professional expertise and the commitment shown by staff. I commend the staff for their hard work providing a valuable service to Islanders.”

The Standards Council of Canada promotes the protection of public health and safety through lab accreditation. It performs periodic audit reviews on labs to determine compliance with international standards. It assesses technical capabilities as well as specific areas where labs claim proficiency.

To achieve the recognition, the PEI Analytical Laboratories established a quality management system to meet the international requirements for testing laboratories. They were first accredited in 2003.

“The agriculture industry looks to the labs to provide accurate and timely analysis of a complete range of agricultural samples,” said Agriculture Minister George Webster. “The staff of the lab can be extremely proud of meeting the needs of our producers and the high standards required for certification.”

The PEI Analytical Laboratories is operated by the departments responsible for water quality and agriculture, the Departments of Environment, Energy and Forestry and Agriculture, Fisheries and Aquaculture.

The labs offer a complete range of environmental and agricultural testing, including groundwaters, surface waters, effluents, soils, feed, plant tissues, manure, compost, seed germination, milk and dairy product samples.

“Government is committed to improving services to protect the health and safety of Islanders and to safeguarding our environment,” said Mr. Brown.
