Climate Change Researchers to Speak in Charlottetown

The Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry has invited two nationally known researchers with expertise on climate change to take part in an information night in Charlottetown, Tuesday, March 3, Minister Richard Brown announced today.

Don Forbes, a research scientist studying sea level rise for Natural Resources Canada, and Gary Lines, a climate change meteorologist with Environment Canada, will present recent information about climatic changes and what that means for Prince Edward Island as part of a discussion about what Islanders can do to prepare.

Prince Edward Island’s Climate Change Coordinator, Brenda Penak, will talk about the the provincial government Climate Change Strategy and the Atlantic Provinces’ Regional Adaptation Collaborative (RAC) on Climate Change.

The meeting will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Theatre A of the Atlantic Veterinary College at UPEI.

“Don Forbes and Gary Lines have looked not just at climate itself but also at how climate change might affect Prince Edward Island. The work they are doing will help government, business and the public make sound decisions on how to deal with this challenge,” said the minister.

Dr. Don Forbes is a research scientist working with the Geological Survey of Canada at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography in Dartmouth, N.S. His research has included studies of sea level rise in Charlottetown, coastal erosion on Prince Edward Island’s north shore and recent work modeling sea level and climate change in southeastern New Brunswick.

Gary Lines is a climate change meteorologist with the Climate Change Division (CCD), Meteorological Service of Canada - Atlantic Region. With three decades of meteorology experience dedicated to the topic of climate and climate change, Mr. Lines has become a regional authority on climate change and seasonal forecasts.
