Atlantic Infrastructure Summit

Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour

The Honourable Carolyn Bertram, Minister Responsible for Infrastructure, was in Halifax today for the Atlantic Infrastructure Summit. The day’s agenda included bilateral and multilateral meetings with Canada’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister, John Baird, and the Ministers responsible for Infrastructure from each of the Atlantic Provinces.

At this afternoon’s meeting, Minister Bertram outlined her commitment to streamlining infrastructure approvals and accelerating infrastructure funding for Island communities. “Accelerated funding will help to drive our economy,” said Minister Bertram. “These investments will include a broad array of infrastructure projects and will target high-priority projects so funds can be obligated and invested quickly.”

Minister Bertram also requested additional infrastructure funding for Prince Edward Island. “Infrastructure spending will not only provide an economic boost and create jobs, but it is also key to improving quality of life, protecting public safety, providing for our municipal needs and reducing our environmental footprint,” said Minister Bertram. “We are requesting that the Government of Canada increase our infrastructure funding, so that we can better meet the needs of Islanders.”

As outlined in the Speech from the Throne, community infrastructure is a high priority for the Government of Prince Edward Island. “We anticipate that with quick, co-ordinated action, we can get infrastructure dollars into community construction projects early in the new year, creating jobs and increasing municipal sustainability,” added Bertram. “There is no doubt that through this Infrastructure Summit we have made progress streamlining our infrastructure programs; however, we still have a ways to go, but I am encouraged about the progress we can make in the coming months.”
