Uigg Community Centre Celebrates Project Completion

Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour

Residents of Uigg will now be able to enjoy an upgraded and accessible community centre, thanks to the combined investments of $76,900 from the Government of Canada, the Province of Prince Edward Island and the Uigg-Kinross-Grandview Women’s Institute. On hand for the open house celebrations today were Alan MacIsaac, MLA for Vernon River - Stratford, and Wayne Hooper of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). They were joined by representatives of the Uigg-Kinross-Grandview Women’s Institute at the community centre to celebrate and showcase the recently completed renovations.

Commenting on the completion of the project, the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State (ACOA) said, “The Government of Canada is pleased to partner on initiatives that enhance the quality of life for Islanders and keep Island communities vibrant and strong.”

“This historical building is a focal part of our community and plays host to many events and community organizations,” said MLA MacIsaac. “The government of Prince Edward Island is proud to be a part of this important infrastructure project and I congratulate the community for making it happen.”

In 1969, the Uigg-Kinross-Grandview Women’s Institute purchased the former Uigg School and converted it into a community centre. “We strive to preserve the spirit of neighbourliness, kinship and hospitality,” said President Helen Dawson. “We want to thank the federal and provincial governments for their support, as well as the many neighbours and friends who donated their time and funds.”

Improvements to the Uigg Community Centre included raising the building to install a new foundation; improvements to the septic and electrical systems; a new roof; and additional upgrades to increase energy efficiency. The building was also renovated to increase wheelchair accessibility. The improvements will enable the centre to increase its capacity to reach new audiences and enhance its existing programs, while contributing to overall community sustainability.

Financial assistance for this project was provided by the Canada-PEI Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF), which is administered by ACOA and the PEI Department of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour, through the Canada-PEI Infrastructure Secretariat. Project costs are shared on a one-third basis between the federal and provincial governments and project applicants.
