Launching the new Island Community Fund

Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour

Today Premier Robert Ghiz and the Honourable Carolyn Bertram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour, launched the new Island Community Fund. Committed to in Budget 2008, this new initiative represents a provincial investment of $27.5 million towards the infrastructure needs of Prince Edward Island communities. The Fund consists of two components - a small projects component, and a strategic initiatives component.

“The Island Community Fund is a six-year commitment to address the infrastructure needs of Islanders,” said Premier Ghiz. “This is a huge investment in our province, our people and our future.”

The Island Community Fund has been established to enable municipal governments and non-governmental organizations to access funds for projects not eligible under the current suite of Infrastructure programs, and to support strategic interests of the Province.

“Eligible categories of funding under this new program include: Community Safety and Security, Recreation, and Cultural infrastructure not funded under the current programs,” said Minister Bertram. “A high priority will also be given to projects which support strategic initiatives for the entire province.”

The Small Project Component will provide up to 75% funding for eligible projects, to a maximum contribution of $150,000. The Strategic Project Component provides funding to projects that promote the strategic interests of the Province. This component will provide up to 50% funding for eligible projects, to a maximum contribution of $1,500,000. The target percentage split of funding between the Small Projects Component and the Strategic Projects Component is 60% - 40% respectively.

“Our Government is committed to high quality, sustainable infrastructure for all Island communities,” said Minister Bertram. “By enhancing our infrastructure, we are building safer and stronger communities, where people can live, work and play.”
