Heritage Minister Carolyn Bertram announced today that, in response to the results of a comprehensive study into the heritage of Prince Edward Island, government will commit to creating a centrally-located provincial museum facility and will also work to develop a heritage strategy which can guide future government planning for Heritage.

“It is important that we undertake proper planning for a new facility to ensure it meets the expectations and needs of the people of our province. This is a very exciting time for heritage and I am committed to having a provincial museum of which we can all be proud,” Minister Bertram said.

The study is entitled Charting a Course: a Study of Heritage on PEI. The Minister noted that the study is a far-reaching and important document that represents Islanders priorities for heritage. She said the document will be used to help formulate government’s renewed commitment to heritage.

“As a result of this study, we will begin work immediately on the creation of a heritage strategy. Within one year, we will have a series of heritage priorities and specific action areas identified to address various heritage needs. The strategy will recognize that heritage goes beyond bricks and mortar – heritage is a way of thinking about our Island community.”

The Minister commended the more than 500 Islanders who attended public meetings, served as informants, presented briefs or took advantage of the internet options to make their views known.

“This study clearly shows that heritage is important to Islanders and that the provincial government is expected to take a leadership role in the preservation and presentation of the heritage of our Island community.

“Some of the areas covered in the report, such as greater involvement of the aboriginal community and investment in the Museum and Heritage Foundation sites, are already being addressed; other recommendations may be implemented over a longer term,” she said.

The study, which was prepared by the Iris Group of Stratford in association with A.L. Arbic Consulting of Nova Scotia, is available to the public online at www.gov.pe.ca/go/heritagestudy.
