Reminder: Change the Batteries in Smoke Alarms this Weekend

Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour

Hon. Carolyn Bertram Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour is encouraging Islanders to check and replace the batteries in smoke alarms this weekend.

“With the time change this weekend, we are reminded to replace old batteries with fresh, high-quality batteries in order keep smoke alarms in good working condition,” said Minister Bertram, who is also the minister responsible for the Fire Prevention Act.

The Provincial Fire Marshal’s Office recommends that all smoke alarms be tested at least monthly and, if there is any doubt about the working condition of a smoke alarm, the unit should be replaced.

There should be at least one working smoke detector on every level of your home, including the basement and family room. To assure optimal protection and avoid false alarms, smoke detectors must be mounted properly. There are simple instructions included in every smoke alarm package at purchase.

Anyone with questions about fire safety is encouraged to contact your Community Fire Department or the Provincial Fire Marshal’s Office at 368-4869.
