“We know that the high cost of fuel has put financial pressure on many seniors in the Province, particularly those on a fixed income,” said Minister Doug Currie. “This program provides our Island seniors with assistance to keep their homes warmer this winter, making it easier for them to stay in their homes and communities.”

The program will contribute 50 per cent of the cost of eligible repairs up to a maximum grant of $1,500 to qualifying seniors.

The Seniors’ Emergency Home Repair Program was reinstated in November, 2007. Since that time, demand for the program has been high. Repairs have been made to 350 homes, including plumbing and electrical upgrades, as well as replacement of old doors and windows and furnaces. The total investment in these projects was over $410,000 with more than an additional $700,000 generated back into the Island economy through the creation of work for contractors and the purchase of building materials.

Jim Doyle is an Island Senior who was able to replace some of his windows and doors with assistance from the Program. He says the grant meant he could make some much-needed improvements to his home sooner than he might have otherwise been able.

“I could feel the cold air getting through the sides of the doors and windows in the winter, and I knew they had to be replaced,” Mr. Doyle said. “The process of getting the funding was so simple, and it took no time at all to get my doors replaced. I’m really pleased.”

Minister Currie says he’s heard many stories like Mr. Doyle’s. “The response to the program has been overwhelmingly positive,” Minister Currie said. “I encourage all Island seniors to inquire about the program. We want to help our Island seniors stay in their own homes longer and that’s good news for everyone.”

To be eligible for the Seniors’ Home Repair Program, you must be 60 years of age or older, with a combined net household income under $30,000 per year. You must also own the house to be repaired, which must be your principal residence.
