The Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, and Mike Campbell, Chief Executive Officer for the Charlottetown Airport Authority Inc. met today to tour and discuss the $2.1 million Charlottetown Airport Expansion.

The funding for this project was announced in December of 2006 through the Canada-Prince Edward Island Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF), a joint initiative between the Federal Government, the Government of PEI and the Charlottetown Airport Authority.

“This expansion will provide direct benefits to visitors, residents, and the Island economy,” said Minister MacFadyen. “It will bring economic benefits through the construction phase, and the expansion will bring additional profitable spinoffs over the long term to the variety of businesses in the transportation, tourism, and retail sectors which benefit from a strong, vibrant airport.

“These renovations are being constructed to allow the Airport to meet federal standards for the processing of international passengers through the Canadian Border Services Agency,” added Minister MacFadyen. “The Government of PEI is proud to be supporting such a wonderful project, which benefits residences and businesses from one end of the province to the other.”

Renovations for the airport include a 1026.5 square meter addition of new floor space to the air terminal building which will serve as an off-loading area and a passenger greeting section, the installation of a second incoming baggage handling belt to better handle the arrival of simultaneous flights, as well as an expanded entrance area and washroom facilities.

“The renovations are going wonderfully,” said Mr. Campbell. “The building frame is up, closed in and sealed, and the roofing is complete. Currently we are installing the underground electrical and mechanical fixtures as well as pouring the concrete flooring.

“Our vision and mission for the Charlottetown Airport centers around providing up-to-date and modern facilities to maximize the attraction of air travel to PEI,” adds Mr. Campbell. “The expansion project is right on schedule; we plan on being finished by June 15.”
