The Links at Crowbush Cove, considered the crown jewel of PEI’s many world-class golf courses, served as a spring board for a young Mike Weir as he proved to himself, and the world, that he could compete with some of the best golfers in the world at the 1998 Canadian Skins Game. On July 29-30, Weir, the only male Canadian golfer to win a major golf championship when he won the 2003 Masters, will return to Crowbush Cove as a Canadian golf legend to participate in the 2007 edition of the Making the Connection® Legends of Golf.

Making the Connection Legends of Golf is an event that celebrates some of golf’s greatest players and the rivalries that they share. The first edition of the event, held last June at Dundarave Golf Course at The Rodd Brudenell River Resort, featured what many consider to be the greatest rivalry the game has seen, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, playing before 7,200 spectators over the two-day event. The event has proven to be a very effective promotional vehicle for Prince Edward Island. Last year’s broadcast was seen in Canada, Spain, Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic and the United States and continues to be marketed to other countries and media outlets.

“I have always looked back fondly on playing at Crowbush Cove in 1998 and am very excited about the chance to return to Prince Edward Island this summer,” said Weir. “Not only is PEI home to some of the best golf in Canada, but it’s also home to some of the friendliest people you could meet. I don’t get the chance to play in Canada as much as I would like, so I literally jumped at the chance to return to play in PEI.”

As one of Canada’s premier golf destinations, Prince Edward Island plays official host to this professional golf event, which is a partnership between IMG Canada, Tourism PEI and Making the Connection. Making the Connection is a program dedicated to the ongoing education of Canadians about the dangers of high cholesterol, and to encouraging Canadians to take action to control high cholesterol to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

“We are thrilled to have Mike Weir return to Prince Edward Island for the 2007 event,” noted Honourable Philip Brown, Minister of Tourism. “Many Islanders feel a connection with Mike, not only because he is Canadian, but because he had such great results at our 1998 Canadian Skins Game and many consider that event as his launch into professional golf. Everyone is looking forward to another great event at Crowbush this year.”

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSFC) is the designated charity for the Making the Connection Legends of Golf, as well as a member of the Making the Connection program. The partnership also includes the Canadian Lipid Nurse Network, the Canadian Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation, Diabetes Québec, and Pfizer Canada Inc. Last year, the Making the Connection Legends of Golf event raised $34,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. For more information about cholesterol, Canadians should speak to a health care professional, visit www.makingtheconnection.ca, or call 1-877-4-LOW-LDL.

Mike Weir’s competition in the 2007 Making the Connection Legends of Golf event will be announced in the coming weeks along with event ticket information.
