Members of the Dental Association of PEI and the Dental Hygienists Association of PEI; staff of Dental Public Health, Department of Social Services and Seniors; and instructors and students in the Dental Assisting program of Holland College joined forces recently to provide basic dental health services to Islanders with limited family incomes.

An examination and cleaning day that provided access to care to almost 40 people was held at the Holland College Charlottetown Centre recently.

Dr. Barry Maze, Public Dental Health Consultant, said the Smiles Clinic was a fine example of the dedication of dental professionals to providing the best service possible for all Islanders.

“This day was truly a collaborative effort of the dental community,” said Dr. Maze. “Our objective is to improve individuals’ oral health to a level where they can maintain it on their own.”

Helen Flynn, Manager of Holland College’s Health and Community Studies Department, agreed. “Activities such as the Smiles Clinic are a valuable learning experience for our students, as well as providing them with the opportunity to work alongside skilled professionals,” she said. “Our Dental Assisting staff and students were delighted to participate in such a worthwhile program.”

Dr. Cheryl Moore, Community Dentistry Committee Chairperson of the Dental Association of PEI, said members of the association were pleased to participate in the clinic.

"There has been a very positive response to the project by dentists from all across PEI, to provide basic dental treatment to individuals who might not otherwise be able to obtain these services,” she said. “Approximately one-third of practicing general dentists on the Island are participating, either in the one-day clinic or at the follow-up appointments in the coming months."

Nancy McKinnon, President of the PEI Dental Hygienists Association, said dental hygienists were also very enthusiastic about the clinic.

"PEI dental hygienists were very pleased to participate in this endeavour to help promote oral health for those individuals not able to access dental care,” she said.

Plans are underway to provide follow-up for clients from the Smiles Clinic who require minor treatment.
