Government of Prince Edward Island Intends to Increase Funding to the PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Crisis Centre

Social Services and Seniors

Hon. Chester Gillan, Minister of Social Services and Seniors today in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island detailed Government’s intention to increase funding by $50,000 to the PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Crisis Centre, boosting this year’s contribution to $207,800.

“This increase will enable the PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Crisis Centre to provide more front-line counseling resources,” said Minister Gillan.

The PEI Rape and Sexual Assault Crisis Centre is a non-profit organization that provides services to adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and sexual assault across our province. The Centre provides a confidential, toll-free crisis line available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is staffed by trained volunteers. On average, volunteers provide 60 hours per month to support up to 175 calls per year. Additionally, the Centre provides specialized counseling for adult survivors of sexual assault, rape and childhood sexual abuse. Approximately, 80 per cent of clients are adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

In his address to the Legislature, Minister Gillan took the opportunity to express appreciation to all the volunteers, community groups and service providers who are working diligently to address family violence in the province.

“I would also like to commend the members of the Premier’s Action Committee on Family Violence Prevention for their ongoing leadership in addressing the impacts of family violence in Island communities,” added Minister Gillan.
