March 13 to 17 is Social Work Week in Prince Edward Island and the Department of Social Services and Seniors and the Department of Health recognize the significant contributions of social workers to the well-being of Prince Edward Island communities.

“This week is an occasion to recognize the important, and often difficult work, of the more than 200 social workers in our province, most of whom work within government,” says Hon. Chester Gillan, minister responsible for Social Services and Seniors and Health. “Whether working in health care, child protection, adoption, foster care or with seniors, persons with disabilities or children in care, social workers are helping to advance and strengthen Prince Edward Island families and communities.”

Social Work Week is organized by the Prince Edward Island Association of Social Workers to draw attention to the importance of the profession. Within the public service of the province, social workers work in a variety of settings: child and family services, hospitals, long-term care facilities, community health centres, school boards, correctional institutions, social assistance services, adult protection, victim services as well as mental health and addictions services.

Margaret Kennedy, President of the Prince Edward Island Association of Social Workers, advised that special events are planned during the week to allow members to network, share learnings and participate in a workshop on a timely practice issue.

Minister Gillan congratulated social workers across the province for the very good work they are doing and urged them to continue to work together, with their local communities, to address health issues and concerns of children, families, seniors and those in need of affordable housing, disability support or financial assistance.
