Libraries Offer Free Book To Grade One Students - Omar On Ice Written By Maryann Kovalski

Community and Cultural Affairs

The Provincial Library Service today announced the title of the 2004 book for Grade one students. Omar on Ice, written by Maryann Kovalski is the fourth free book made available to Grade one students across the province on behalf of the TD Bank.

The Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, invites all Grade one students to visit their local public library between November 21 and 28 to receive a free copy of Omar on Ice. “Owning their own book provides an incentive for children to develop their literacy skills and their imagination. The library hopes that, through this program, children will continue on the path of success in their education and develop a life-long love of reading.”

The TD Bank graciously provides all Grade one students in Canada with their own book as a means to promote literacy.

“I invite parents to read this book with their children. It is so important that parents participate in the development of their children's literacy skills,” explains Allan Groen, Provincial Librarian. “Parent involvement in the education of children is a crucial success factor in their long-term success.”

Copies of the book are available in both official languages.

The book also includes an invitation and application for a public library card.

For further information, please contact your local public library. Contact information may be found in the Blue pages, at www.library.pe.ca or by phoning Provincial Library Service Headquarters at 961-7320.
