Minister Corrects Information on Infrastructure

Community and Cultural Affairs

Recent news reports and editorials have suggested that Prince Edward Island is the only province in Canada which has not signed the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Program.

“This information is incorrect,” said Honourable Elmer MacFadyen, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs and Minister responsible for infrastructure programs in PEI. “I have been advised by Infrastructure Canada that, to date, no province or territory has signed the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Program.”

Minister MacFadyen believes it is unfortunate that Islanders are left with the impression that our province is far behind other jurisdictions in terms of reaching a deal on this program. “We are continuing to negotiate with the federal government in an attempt to reach an agreement as soon as possible. I realize that this is an important program for communities in this province and I am working to resolve all outstanding issues between our province and the federal government.”

The Minister noted that Prince Edward Island has fully participated in the Canada/Prince Edward Island Infrastructure Program as well as the Canada Strategic Infrastructure Program. “We realize the importance of infrastructure funding for Island communities and we will continue to work with municipalities to address their infrastructure needs.”
