70 Years of Library Service Celebrated at Literacy Expo - Expo to Promote Literacy Programs Across the Province

Community and Cultural Affairs

Prince Edward Island has many literacy programs and services available to assist children and adults in improving their literacy skills. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Prince Edward Island Provincial Library Service, literacy partners across the province will host a Literacy Expo at the Charlottetown Mall on Saturday, October 23, 2004. The expo is an interactive demonstration of the many learning opportunities and fun activities available to Islanders.

“In celebration of our 70th Anniversary of library service on PEI and Provincial Library Week 2004, the Literacy Expo is designed to share information on the many learning opportunities available in Prince Edward Island and to make the general public more aware of services for children, families and adult learners,” said Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, Elmer MacFadyen.

The expo will include: a display of historic library photos dating back to 1933; a large book draw; Frontier College’s Reading Tent; opportunities for volunteers to join Project L.O.V.E.; a presentation of Storysacks from the Provincial Correction Centre to the branch libraries; a display of Adult learning materials by the Adult and Community Education Association; an exhibit from Workplace Education PEI; presentations on literacy activities sponsored by the PEI Literacy Alliance; a display of literature for French learners by Société éducative de l'Î.-P.-É.; lots of freebies and prizes for everyone!
