Open Farm Day this Sunday
Agriculture, Fisheries, Aquaculture & Forestry
“Open Farm Day is a great opportunity for everyone to learn more about our leading industries in the province and the people behind them,” said Agriculture, Fisheries, Aquaculture and Forestry Minister Kevin MacAdam. “It is also a great time to recognize the major contributions that agriculture and forestry make to our economy and way of life.”
Mr. MacAdam said the Island is noted for the quality of its pastoral landscape of farms, fields and forests, but that many do not fully appreciate the complexity of agricultural and forestry operations and the economic and environmental benefits they provide.
The participating farms and woodlots will be demonstrating a wide range of commodities and practices. Among the agricultural operations are those involved in livestock, potatoes, fruits and vegetables, speciality products such as garlic and mushrooms and farm equipment. Forestry operations will be highlighting woodlot management practices, Christmas trees and maple syrup. Some operations will also have products to sample or purchase.
A list of participating farms and woodlots is being published in daily newspapers. Watch for the Open Farm Day signs and find out more about daily life on the farm and in the forests.
