Community and Cultural Affairs

Minister responsible for Sport, Elmer MacFadyen today offered congratulations to Island participants in the National Seniors Games recently held in the Yukon. In total, Island participants captured 28 medals - 6 Gold, 9 Silver and 13 Bronze. The Island team was led by PEI 55+ Games Society President Alfred ”Chick” Morrison who also attended the annual meeting of the National Games Association while in the Yukon.

“It is my pleasure to congratulate Team PEI on an excellent competition and on their 28 medals,” said Minister MacFadyen. “I am especially pleased to see that the participants are continuing to remain socially and physically active. The athletes participating in these games are wonderful role models in encouraging people of all ages to increase their physical activity levels.”

The 2004 games included more athletes than ever before in the history of the seniors’ games. The Prince Edward Island contingent included 56 athletes competing in 5-pin bowling, golf, darts, swimming, track and field, curling and hockey.

With more than 1,500 participants, organizers of the 2004 Canada Senior Games are calling the games the best-attended event in games history.

The 2006 Canada Senior Games will be held in the City of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.
