Prince Edward Island Plans To Party On

Economic Development

Prince Edward Island accommodations operators are looking forward to calls from Maritimers who plan to attend BridgeFest '97 celebrations next month. While some of the major hotels have been booked up by official delegations and dignitaries, most of the Island's motels, inns, B&Bs cottages and campgrounds report plenty of room at this point. And while expectations are high for a very good tourism season, operators say that there are plenty of available accommodations for the rest of the summer.

"We certainly encourage Maritimers to call now and reserve rooms for June 1 weekend, or later in the season," says Gerry Gallant, President of the Tourism Industry Association of Prince Edward Island. "We are a long way from sold-out status, but to get the accommodation of your choice, we suggest booking now."

Ticket sales are reported to be brisk for the events and concerts scheduled for what Islanders are calling the party of the century, BridgeFest '97. Already more than 5,000 people are registered to walk across the Confederation Bridge on May 30, expected to be the one and only chance to experience the thrilling view from 6 kms out and 60 metres up over the Northumberland Strait. Strait Crossing does not plan to limit the number of tickets for the walk, and thousands of tickets are still available for the concerts by performers like Great Big Sea, Barachois and Prairie Oyster.

"The opening of the Confederation Bridge is definitely the event of a lifetime," said Frank Butler, Chief Operating Officer of Tourism PEI, "and we think BridgeFest will be a fitting way to mark it. We would like to invite all Maritimers to join in the festivities as we get the summer of 1997 off to a great start."

BridgeFest '97 is only the first of a season full of exciting festivals and events on Prince Edward Island. Following quickly on the heels of the June 1 weekend, will be the Festival of Lights, when Canada's birthplace celebrates Canada Day in a big way. Three days of concerts and festivities will be followed by the Summer Time Jazz and Blues Festival, July 2-5.

In Summerside, Jammin' Country starts off the season in June, followed by the Highland Gathering at the College of Piping and Performing Arts, where concerts will take place over the summer. Then in August, everybody's favourite, Old Home Week is back, with the Gold Cup and Saucer on August 16, the livestock exhibition and a great new series of concerts. In eastern PEI, follow the Road to Rollo Bay for first-rate musical events featuring bluegrass and fiddle festivals.

Operators across Prince Edward Island are ready and waiting for another great season. Information on BridgeFest '97, the Festival of Lights, the Highland Gathering or any PEI festival is available by calling 1-800-463-4PEI.
