go!PEI encourages Islanders to “Walk-a-Lot” Challenge as part of Samuel Holland 250 Commemorations
Tourism and Culture
“This challenge is a great way to recover from our long winter and head outdoors to enjoy fresh air and physical activity. go!PEI is excited to be working with Samuel Holland 250 to help create awareness of Island history.” states Olivia Ford, go!PEI Provincial Coordinator. “Each participant will receive a water bottle and have a chance to win great prizes including a top prize of a $500 gift card donated by Sporting Intentions.”
This partnership will provide an ideal opportunity to celebrate and explore the Island that Samuel Holland’s map helped to create.
“The focus of the Samuel Holland 250 commemorations is to grow the understanding of Samuel Holland’s work, the historical significance of his map, and its profound influence on our Island identity, and how it continues to define us today.” says Dr. David Keenlyside, Chair of the Samuel Holland 250 Commemorations Committee, “We’re pleased to partner on the Walk-a-Lot Challenge as it helps to share Holland’s legacy Island wide.”
To assist Walk-a-Lot participants with identifying their lot location, a new and unique mobile site has been developed called,www.whatsmylot.com. The application was developed by web programmer and designer Peter Rukavina. Whatsmylot.com uses GPS technology to inform users which of the 67 lots they are standing in as well it provides a brief description of the lots or county capital’s origins.
For this challenge, a team can be any group of people including family, friends, co-workers, and/or neighbors. Once you have the team in place, your Team Captain can register by emailing gopei@recreationpei.ca or calling (902) 892-5323. Once registered, a captain’s kit including the challenge guidelines and participant packages will be sent out.
