Storm update

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal

Islanders are urged to remain off the roads and monitor updates from the RCMP as the storm has created significant challenges and cleanup will take time.

All provincial civil service offices will be closed Tuesday, February 17. The English Language School Board and Commission scolaire de langue Francaise have announced that all schools will be closed Tuesday, February 17.

“Plows will be on the roads as conditions allow; however a significant amount of snow has fallen and it will take time for crews to clean up and clear the roads,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey. “The combination of significant snowfall and high winds created zero visibility conditions, creating safety hazards for our plow operators.”

Clean up from the storm will take several days. There will be a lot of heavy equipment and plows on the roads as cleanup from the storm begins. If the plows have to accommodate traffic, it creates safety concerns and slows down the work significantly.

“I want to thank our highway maintenance crews for their hard work during these very difficult conditions, and all Islanders for their resiliency and patience,” said the minister. “Even as storm conditions improve, Islanders should remain off the roads as crews work to make our roads safer.”
