The official history of the geographic name Hunter River (which can be somewhat technical, we admit):
Hunter River (Sett., P.O.) was adopted in Place Names of PEI, 1924. Confirmed 12 December 1939 on 11L/6.Changed to Hunter River (Hunters River P.O.-B. de p.)( Hamlet) 22 November 1966 on 11L/6.Name changed back to Hunter River (Hamlet) 4 January 1967 on 11L/6.Status changed to Locality when Hunter River became par t of the Community of Hunter River in 1974. Named after Thomas Orby Hunter; stationed at Rotterdam, 1746 as deputy paymaster for the English and Dutch troops; lord of the Admiralty, 1761.- PN of PEI, 19 25.
