Biographical history
William J. Howard was born on 8 February 1860 to John and Elizabeth (Balderson) Howard. The Howards farmed 250 acres at North River, Prince Edward Island, across the York, or North, River from Charlottetown. This property presumably passed to William when his father died sometime between 1881 and 1891. On 31 December 1885 William married Mary Emma Ross of West River. They had four children, Gladys, Davis, Kaye, and Grace[?]
In 1911 the family moved to Coos Bay, Oregon, where William and his brother purchased the Hope ranch on North Inlet. W.J. Howard died at Hauser, Oregon on 20 February 1938, aged 78.

Custodial history
It seems likely that this diary was taken west by W. J. Howard. At some point it left family hands and was purchased in November 1993 by the donor at a flea market in Eugene, Oregon.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of a "scribbling" diary kept by William J, Howard which provides a daily account of weather and activities of the Howard farm in North River, P.E.I. for the year 1908. It includes accounts of planting, fencing, harrowing, etc as well as household chores and getting the wood in. Visits to nearby neighbours and to surrounding areas such as Highfield, Cornwall, Warrens Mill, and Bedeque are mentioned along with deaths of friends and prominent people. A day's entry is often concluded with a homily.
