History
The Vernon River United Church pastoral charge currently consists of the communities and surrounding areas of Pownal, Orwell, Orwell Head, Vernon River, Cherry Valley, and Millview, Prince Edward Island. Prior to 1968, when the amalgamation and building of one central church took place, the area encompassed by the union was split into several circuits of varying religious affiliations, i.e. Bible Christian, Methodist and Presbyterian, until 1925 when the Congregationalist, Presbyterian and Methodist churches joined to form the United Church. Circuit boundaries also changed throughout the years. Orwell Head, originally a Presbyterian congregation which included the Orwell section of the Belfast congregation, remained a separate circuit until 1968. Clifton and Mt. Herbert, originally part of the Pownal circuit joined Charlottetown Trinity United in 1962. Millview remained with Pownal to become part of the Vernon River pastoral charge. Cherry Valley was also part of the Pownal circuit for a period of time.
