Biographical history
Matthew G. Hatvany earned a PhD in Canadian-American History from the University of Maine followed by a PhD in Geography from Université Laval. Since 2000, he has been professor of historical geography at Université Laval in Quebec City, Quebec.

This thesis argues that the settlement and socio-economic developmental patterns of early Prince Edward Island were not unique because of the existence of a proprietary land tenure system but markedly similar to patterns established elsewhere in northeastern Canada and the United States.
