Historique

The Roman Catholic chapel of St. Dunstan's was opened for service in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on St. Patrick's Day 1825 although a smaller edifice appers to have been in existence on Sydney Street as early as 1819. In 1843 the chapel was moved back on the site and the building of the new Cathedral began with first mass being celebrated therein in 1848. This wooden church stood on the west side of Great Church facing Dorchester Street. On 15 September 1896 the cornerstone was laid for a new stone edifice which was completed and dedicated on 19 September 1907. This building was destroyed by fire on 8 March 1913 and replaced by the current Cathedral.
