George William Smith was born in England and emigrated to Canada as a young man. He appears to have had some gardening experience and during the late 1930s had training by correspondence in landscape architecture. During the mid to late 1930s he laid out several gardens in the Summerside, Prince Edward Island, area. Following WWII he began a horticulture business and operated greenhouses in St. Eleanor's. He designed the garden area of Queen Elizabeth Park in Summerside.
