William M. was born on 29 August 1900 to Ambrose Silliphant of Hunter River and Julia Binns of New Glasgow, Prince Edward Island. He had a sister, Florence Mae Patterson was born 11 February 1904. When William went to California in 1924 to study medicine, the family moved with him. William completed his medical training and joined the U.S. Navy in 1930. He was stationed in the Philippines and during the war was taken prisoner by the Japanese. He survived the four years (1941-1945) in the prison camp recorded in his Diary and returned to California to practice medicine until his death in 1967.
