Notice biographique
"An Act for the encouragement of Education in the different Counties and districts in this Island" (5George IV, 1825, cap. V) allowed for the Lieutenant-Governor to issue a warrant for 50 towards the support of a grammar school in Charlottetown provided that the nearest clergyman to the school certified in one schedule the names and ages of the scholars taught therein, their dates of entrance, and the branches of education they were learning. The list had to have at least ten male students of the age of seven or upwards. This document was then to be filed in the Secretary's Office. Little more is known of the Grammar School which operated in Charlottetown although it appears to have been attended by the children of most of the prominent Charlottetown families.
Historique de la conservation
This document was found in the papers of J. E. B. McCready. There is no known connection between Mr. McCready and this document which, at one time, formed part of the papers of the Executive Council of Prince Edward Island.
Présentation du contenu
The document is a memorial from Alex Brown, teacher of the grammar school to the President in Council, as required under an Act of the Legislature. It is signed by Thomas Adin, Rector of Charlotte Town, and was probably submitted in anticipation of the allowed grant from the Lieutenant-Governor. Document is inscribed "Read in Council, May 2nd. 1826". As required, the schedule includes names, ages, dates of entrance, and subjects studied by some 84 students who enrolled in the school from May 1825 to April 1826. A remarks column consists of dates of leaving and return of the students.
