Scope and content

The series contains Rev. Sutherland's register of visitations and alphabetical list of families in 1890 as well as his yearly diary and clerical record from 1891-1894 and 1896. The latter record speaking engagements, marriages, burials and baptisms performed, place, date, and subject of sermons preached, and salary received.

David Sutherland was born in Bruan, Caithness County, Scotland in 1858, the eldest son of Alexander Sutherland. He studied at Edinburgh University and Pine Hill Divinity College in Halifax, N.S. His first church as an ordained minister was Grove Church, Richmond, N.S. Here he married Mary Ellen (Minnie) Weatherbie with whom he had 4 children. Responding to a call from the congregation, he was inducted as Minister at Zion Presbyterian Church on 18 December 1889. He remained as pastor until his untimely death on 8 July 1898.
