Administrative history
The first general meeting of the Prince Edward Island Symphony Society was held on 2 May 1968 at West Kent School following two previous meetings of interested citizens and advance work by the Women's Auxiliary in obtaining an organizational grant from the government and soliciting contributions from businesses and individuals for a premiere performance. George J. Tweedy was appointed President, Sister Winnifred McIver Vice President, David Boswall Secretary, and W.J. Bigelow Treasurer. A constitution and by-laws were adopted and directors chosen from the three counties. Chairmen were appointed for membership, program, finance, and publicity committees. In its support and promotion of symphony music in general and the orchestra in particular, the Society has obtained grant monies from the Arts and Canada Councils as well as the Provincial Government, solicited corporate donations and sponsorships and undertaken fund-raising endeavours such as the sale of citrus fruit and the Classic Car lottery. As well as the regular season of concerts, mini-tours and out-run concerts are organized and an annual symphony ball held.
