Historique

On 27 November 1952, a meeting was held at the Provincial Vocational School in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, to discuss the possibility of organizing a provincial home and school federation. Eighteen of the Island's twenty-two home and school associations were represented at that meeting. The Prince Edward Island Federation of Home and School Associations was officially established at a meeting held on 29 January 1953 in the Prince of Wales auditorium. The following officers were nominated at the first official meeting: Mrs. Gordon MacDonald (president), Mr. M. T. MacQuaid (vice-president, Kings County), Mrs. Basil MacDonald (vice-president, Queens County), Mr. A. H. Hubley (vice-president, Prince County), Miss. Mabel Matheson (corresponding secretary), Mrs. W. E. Scantlebury (recording secretary), Mr. J. J. Connolly (treasurer), and Miss. Helen Gallant (convenor of archives).

Like the home and school associations at the local level, the PEI Federation of Home and School Associations sought to encourage communication between parents and schools in order to provide the best education for Island children. The members of the executive met on a monthly basis and annual meetings were held in June. The Federation often struck special committees to investigate and report on issues related to education. Guest speakers were also invited to address members at the annual and semi-annual meetings on topics such as: teacher recruitment; improving the public image of teachers; parent education; the role of home, school, and community in child learning and development; and considerations for students with special needs. Today, the PEI Federation of Home and School Associations remains an active organization committed to quality education for the Island's youth.
