Custodial history

Scope and content

This fonds consists of a paper read by Rev. H. Pierce on the occasion of the reopening of the Orwell United Church, Orwell, Prince Edward Island, on 23 August 1931 after the completion of some renovations. It contains a brief history of the Belfast/Orwell area with particular reference to the Presbyterian/United Church. This paper was given by the Rev. H. Pierce to Rev. George A. Grant, father of the donor.

For many years, residents of the surrounding area worshiped at St. John's Presbyterian Church in Belfast, Prince Edward Island. By 1861, the population of the Orwell area had increased to the point where the people decided to build their own church. They were still ministered to by the pastor of St. John's until 1886 when they joined the Murray Harbour Road Church to form a new congregation. In 1928, when many congregations of the Presbyterian Church joined the United Church of Canada, Orwell and the Methodist churches of Vernon River and Cherry Valley amalgamated under the ministry of Rev. George A. Grant.
