Historique

The Masonic Lodge Opera House, located on Grafton street, Charlottetown, was built in 1891 by architects Phillips and Chappell of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The corner stone was laid on 24 May 1892, by Donald Darrach and the building had three stories. Located on the first floor, the theatre had a seating capacity for one thousand people. The St. John's and Victoria Lodge Mason groups held meetings on the upper stories. With the advent of motion pictures, the opera house was transformed into the Prince Edward Theatre about 1919. In its latter years there was a confectionery store located in the southwest corner of the building. The theatre was destroyed by fire on 14 December 1955.
