Biographical history
On 29 January 1926, six women met at the Queen Hotel to organize a club whose members would read together the best in literature, prepare papers on chosen subjects, and contribute and discuss current events. The club was named "The Study Lovers Club" and its first president was Margaret R. (Mrs. Cecil) Stewart. She served for 31 years until her death in 1957. At that time the name was changed to the Margaret Stewart Study Club. In 1949 the club became a member of the Canadian Home Reading Union. Initially meetings were held weekly at members' homes or the Queen Hotel. Social events such as teas, annual dinners, and bridge games were also enjoyed by the club. Membership rose and fell over the years and the club is still active to date.
