History

A. B. MacEachern, a pioneer missionary, emigrated from Scotland in 1790. For forty-five years he ministered to the people of Prince Edward Island, the Magdelan Islands, and to large sections of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. In 1829, Rome decided to make the Maritime provinces separate from the Diocese of Quebec and in the same year Charlottetown was raised to an episcopal See with MacEachern appointed its first bishop. He founded Prince Edward Island's first institution of higher learning at St. Andrew's in 1831. Bishop MacEachern died in 1835.
