Historique

The Lower Freetown (Prince Edward Island) Women's Institute was organized on 25 May 1923 in the community hall in Lower Freetown. Nine members joined and the first President was Alice Cairns. At the second meeting it was decided to name the club "Harmony". In the early days the Institute was very active in the educational field, paying part of the teacher's salary, supplying maps, books and furniture as well as seeing to renovations and repairs of the local school. Money for these activities was raised by holding socials, cooking contests, and parties. In later years more attention was paid to donations to the Prince County Hospital and gifts to seniors and charities. The Institute was closed in September with the building to be sold and the money to go to the United and Presbyterian Churches and the Prince County Hospital and Hospice.
