Historique

Henry Buckton Laurence was born at Zante in the Ionian Islands, Greece in 1842. In 1861 he purchased the rank of ensign in the Second Battalion, 4th King's Own Royal Regiment, working his way up to the rank of Major by 1881. After service in Corfu and Malta he was stationed at Halifax but immediately transferred to Prince Edward Island by request of the local authorities due to the Tenant League disturnbances. Thids detachment of the Battalion was stationed at the Victoria Barracks in Charlottetown from April 1866 to July 1867. His military career following this included Ireland, England, South Africa and India. He died at Wimbledon in March 1886.
During his postings Laurence made sketches and prints of outdoor activities such as hunting, sleighing, tobogganing, and ice-boating as well as images of moose and bear. His "Sketches of Canadian sports and pastimes" was published in London in 1870, a folder of 19 Tint-stone lithographs. One of his prints of the Zulu War appeared in the "Illustrated London news" and some of his sketches, cartoons and charicatures can be found in the King's Own Regiment Museum in Carlisle.
